Sewing, Sewing, Emmersed in Creating

Sewing stuffsI am at my most happiest natural state when I am creating something. I used to think that meant crossing off tasks in my planner. But although I still keep my planner close to my heart, I am turning to the side a bit to create something new. Making something new for someone else is like giving them a look through your glasses, or like loaning out your shoes so they can stand in them for a bit. It’s like they can peek into your brain and experience a little how you look at the world.

Sometimes I create something new, sometimes I recreate something old. In this case I am surrounded by a semi-contained green explosion of fabric that will be someday a Tinkerbell Halloween outfit for my daughter. Yes, complete with Velcro on mini wings. I would say this pattern is a bit ambitious. (No designing in this project, I am working from a pattern.) It is filled with slippery stretchy fabrics, that refuse to bend, be fully ironed flat, or not fray. The pattern has notches, dots, seam lines, interfacing, and seven skirt layers!! And I haven’t worked from a sewing pattern since junior high school. So far, it is going just fine. I am thanking my mother everyday for teaching me how to sew from complicated patterns. And with my new Janome DC2010 sewing machine (quite very good investment…) the project is going smoothly.

I think I have found my crafting niche…sewing. It just relaxes me to concentrate on a sewing project. My husband falls off his seat in boredom when I start talking about french seams, gathers, darts and pleats. But you seamstresses out there should check out this book: Patchwork Style by Suzuko Koseki. I found it via Soule Mama, ordered it, glanced through it, and immediately wanted to make a log cabin-style quilt. If you open your eyes and your ears, you really can soak in wonderfully rich deep inspiration from all facets of life. It amazes me sometimes.

I’ll give you an update in a bit!  Now, off to my sewing machine with a big cup of coffee!

  • I just went through our local sewing center and wrote down all the classes, it seems that is the only time I give myself to sew, but now that I have read your blog, I will be going into my calendar right now and fitting in a sew only day……..Thank you!
