Yesterday, I gave a brief introduction to Feng Shui. (To read my Feng Shui introduction read my post here.) An ancient Chinese philosophy, Feng Shui is about how the balance of yin and yang in our surroundings affects positive and negative chi energies, which, in turn affect your life and your well being. Although correct application takes decades to master, I hope to encourage you to simply open your eyes and your heart to observe your natural surroundings and understand what you are feeling when you are living in your home. Much of Feng Shui is intuitive but I also will offer you some easy Feng Shui fixes you can do to help good chi flow into your home and eliminate bad chi that drain your wealth, relationships, health, and happiness.

Yesterday I offered some tips about how you can encourage good chi energy in your bathroom. Today I am discussing the master bedroom.

The bedroom is for resting, relaxation, and sexual healing. Feng Shui experts believe the bedroom is the most important room in your home and this room can greatly affect your health, marriage, and prosperity. To enhance and improve these areas of your life, use these Feng Shui tips to create your personal tranquil resting place.

  • Use soft variable lighting to create a relaxing environment.
  • Add soothing and relaxing yin elements soothing candle light, and pale white and earth tones to your bedding and drapery color schemes.
  • Add a touch of red – the color of love and warmth such as an accent pillow in red or a bright red candle. But do not add too much, as red means fire, which is an active element opposite from the relaxing yin environment you are striving to create in the bedroom.
  • Avoid storing items under your bed. This clutter impedes the free flow of good chi energy.
  • Place 3 small green plants on the eastern side of the room to ensure good health. Do not use dried plants or flowers.
  • Position mirrors such that the body does not reflect in the mirror while you sleep. If this is unavoidable, use a curtain or a sheet to cover the mirror at night so negative energy flow will be blocked.
  • Avoid sharp angles, geometric shapes and protruding corners, all of which block the flow of chi energy. If you must have a sharp, protruding angle or edge in the room, place a green plant, an earth element, very near it.
  • Don’t put work-related items like computers, TVs, and exercise equipment in your bedroom. If you must have a TV in the bedroom, place it behind armoire doors to hide it when you are sleeping.
  • If the head of the bed is under a window, your personal energy grows weaker over time because it doesn’t have support or protection behind it. The best remedy for this is to move your bed. If this is impossible, get a high solid strong headboard, wood or upholstered are best. Also put solid heavy drapes over the windows that you can close at night so there will be the illusion of a wall there.
  • Don’t position the bed directly across from a door so that your feet are in line with the door when you are sleeping. This is the position of death. If this position is unavoidable, use a high, solid, footboard or a piece of furniture at the foot of the bed (like a bench) to compensate.
  • Make sure the bed is accessible from both sides to ensure the good flow of chi energy.
  • Balance both sides of the bed with matching nightstands to help improve your relationships.
  • Clear away cluttered surfaces to reveal soothing simple yin lines.

About de-cluttering:

Not only do cluttered spaces slow the flow of positive chi energy, they also make you feel burdened and heavy. Clean, simple, organic lines are Feng Shui design basics. So get rid of visual stress in all areas of your home for a fresh free feeling.

I hope these tips will help you create the quite, relaxing, sanctuary you deserve after each long day.

To be honest, our master bedroom is the last room to be decorated. We decided to decorate the kids’ rooms first when our son moved to his own bed. So right now, I see bare, grey walls, white horizontal blinds, uneven lighting, clutter, and mismatched bedding. I feel anxious and tired when I enter my bedroom. I hope to finish the kids’ crown molding in the next month and then get started on decorating my bedroom. My husband and I definitely deserve a relaxing spa-like sanctuary after full-days chasing after our toddlers!

How do you feel when you are in your bedroom? Which elements do you love? Which elements do you hate? I want to incorporate your comments into my posts this week and help you improve your spaces. So please leave a comment or question about your space!

Bathroom update: I am 98% finished with the painting, I have just a couple touch ups left. I took the kids to Target and Home Depot this morning to pick out shelving, and some décor items, but I still need to hit another few stores to find some of the other pieces I have in mind. Do you think I can finish my bathroom renovation by Friday? Check back and to see pictures of our new finished bathroom!!

Tomorrow I am planning to discuss Feng Shui tips for your kitchen! Also check out my guest post on Kelli’s blog Mom of 3 Boys and a Dog, about Feng Shui tips for Children’s Bedrooms!

  • According to these, I have too much red, since my bedroom walls are painted that color. But-I feel relaxed and warm in my room anyway. :-) Perhaps it’s because I chose a rich, cool, wine color, and not blazing red. Who knows? Like Marci, I pretty much follow those rules too, except for the plants. I’ve been wanting some bamboo for our room. Maybe this summer…

  • Marci, This is fantastic that you are able to understand how you feel in your space. Feng Shui is really about understanding how we emotionally respond to our environment. I’d love to hear more about how you like or dislike other spaces in your home!

  • I think that I have unwittingly followed all your rules of Feng Shui, except I need plants in my room. I have them in other rooms, so I’ll just move them into the bedroom. Our bedroom is relaxing, but I think I could find a better bedspread and paint to make it even more so. The bedspread now is so dark. I need something lighter and more soothing.
